Okawa Shumei is known as a famous ultra-nationalist before W.W.II. But he started his career as a scholar of religious studies, especially as a pioneer of Islam study. Besides, he was also a seeker of religious truth and once belonged to an eclectic religious body called "Do-kai" founded by Matsumura Kaiseki. His religiosity can be classed among "religion of intellectuals" and he also had a connection with the intellectuals of the same kind. They were a French philosopher named Paul Richard and his wife, Mirra, who stayed in Japan and lived with Okawa for a year. Mirra had been a disciple of a mysterious occultist named Max Theon before coming to Japan, and after leaving Japan she would become a spiritual partner of a famous Indian guru, Sri Aurobindo. In this paper the spiritual and religious thoughts of Okawa and the Richards and Aurobindo are discussed to make clear the hidden relationship between them.
