Abstract
Diagnosis of soil is essential for rational soil management in agricultural fields. Estimation of soil properties based on soil sampling is inevitable, because sampling is limited to a portion of soil both in space and time. The objectives of this research were to estimate spatial and temporal variation of soil properties, and to propose a rational soil sampling scheme for soil diagnosis for paddy fields. One hundred samples of surface soil were collected from a paddy, 50m×100m in area, every spring before cultivation in 1999-2002, to collect 400 samples in total. Twelve soil properties were measured and their variation in space and time was analyzed. Overall variation was not uniform among soil properties: CVs of pH and C/N ratio were less than 10%, those of total C, total N, available P, exchangeable Ca, Mg and K were 10〜20%, whereas, those of EC, available N, exchangeable Na and inorganic N were more than 20%, suggesting higher variation for the properties of more labile fractions. Spatial variation showed a similar tendency to overall variation, indicating variable relationships between sampling number and estimation error among soil properties. For example, estimation error at the probability level of 95% was 2.3% for pH, 14% for exchangeable Ca, 16〜18% for total N, exchangeable K, and available P, 27% for available N and 36% for inorganic N, suggesting that estimation error of more than 10% is often associated with the average values of soil properties. Temporal variation also showed a similar tendency to overall and spatial variation and data reliability decreased as the period after data collection increased. In the case of the temporal and spatial scale examined, spatial variation was generally higher than temporal variation. These results should be taken into account in planning soil sampling and in utilizing the data obtained.
