Abstract

The present study examined comprehension of relative clauses by children with hearing impairments. Participants in Experiment I were 40 elementary school children (3rd to 6th grade; average age, 10:4); participants in Experiment II were 23 5th and 6th graders (average age, 11:4). In the 5 conditions in Experiment I, relative clauses were varied in terms of antecedent position and by scrambling the word order. The results indicated that the first factor in comprehension for these children was word order of the nouns (N) and verbs (V), e.g., NNVNV or NVNNV, which is similar to results found in children without hearing impairments (Hakuta, 1982). Half of the children with hearing impairments understood correctly all the variations of relative clauses that were presented, whereas the other children partially used case particles or word-order information. Experiment II examined the extent to which semantic information affected comprehension of relative clauses. The results suggested that the comprehension of most of the children with hearing impairments was affected by the semantic information, but a few of the children were not significantly affected.
