Corrosion resistance of nine experimental Pd-free Ag-Au-Pt-Cu dental alloys and a commercial Ag-Pd-Cu-Au alloy containing 12% Au in a 0.9% NaCl solution was evaluated by means of potentiodynamic polarization measurement. Microstructures of the sample surface after the forward scanning up to 1.0 V were observed by an optical microscope and a scanning electron microscope (SEM). It was found that the corrosion resistance of the experimental Pd-free Ag-Au-Pt-Cu dental alloys was controlled by Ag-Au-rich matrix phase and these alloys have the potential of the clinical application from the viewpoint of corrosion resistance.
