Background : Teachers' literacy concerning schizophrenia is essential for effective promotion of students mental health. Teachers have the role of gatekeeper. However, no investigation has been carried out teachers' literacy concerning schizophrenia. Methods : A total of 92 teachers were surveyed with regard to their literacy concerning schizophrenia by means of a questionnaire with a vignette depicting a case of early schizophrenia. The symptoms described in the vignette fulfilled the criteria of ICD_10. Identification of the case, and coping behavior for the case were investigated. In addition, knowledge, age at onset of the condition and degree of illness were investigated. Results : About thirty percent of respondents were able to make a correct identification. As for coping behavior, counseling and seeing a psychiatrist were selected. A finding was the emphasis on stress as a cause of schizophrenia. Conclusions : It shows that teachers have limited literacy concerning schizophrenia. They need to improve their mental health literacy. In addition, because teachers are expected to act as gatekeepers in the school, an early intervention system has to be constructed. Although the present study is limited in its sampling and the content of the vignette, we could obtain some indications.
