The purpose of this study was to investigate the behavior of keeping a diary in adolescence, considering adolescent meaning and the mental effect of keeping a diary. The subject population consisted of 166 university students (43 males and 123 females). They responded to the questionnaire on the behavior of keeping a diary and three scales (Self-Positiveness Scale, Preoccupation Scale, and Zung Self-Rating Depression Scale). The major findings were as follows: 1) In a ratio of Male to Female, a greater number of Females keep diaries. 2) With the passing of each school year there is an increase in the ratio of the persons who write their “worries” in their diaries. 3) The ratio of those who write “personal secrets which you feel you can not tell anyone” in their diaries is most at a Junior High School age among the four ages. 4) Those who write their “worries” in their diaries tend to reread them more frequently than those not writing it, and when they read these diaries they attain a positive feeling from them. 5) There is the tendency for a depressed person to receive negative influence by writing diaries.
