Abstract

Tropomyosin, one of the regulatory proteins, was extracted from bovine smooth muscle (carotid artery, aorta, trachea, intestine and uterus), chicken gizzard and rabbit skeletal muscle, and the morphological and biochemical properties were investigated. Electron micrographs of tropomyosin oaracrystals from these materials revealed the typical band structure. Periodictities were 376ű10Å (carotide artery) and 362ű10Å (aorta). They were similar to those from other smooth muscles, including chicken gizzard (358ű10Å), while they were different from that of the skeletal muscle (400ű10Å). Amino acid compositions of tropomyosin from the smooth muscles examined were very similar to each other. However, there were small differences between smooth muscle and skeletal muscle tropomyosins: aromatic and basic amino acids are higher, while acidic and ionic amino acids are lower in smooth muscle than skeletal muscle. Desenditized and that of other smooth muscle (chicken gizzard) in the presence of Ca^<2+>. This fact suggests that the activity of vascular smooth muscle has a common regulatory mechanism mediated by a troponin-tropomyosin system.
