Abstract

A practical method is proposed for the prediction of added resistance of a ship in waves based on the combined use of the following two compoments together with empirical corrections. Prediction of added resistance due to ship motion, the first component, is based on Maruo's exact formula in linear potential theory and the singularity density is determined from radiation wave by strip theory with its vertical position modified through comparison with experiments. As to the added resistance due to diffraction from blunt bow in shorter wave length range, the second component, empirical formula previously proposed by Fujii-Takahashi is revised as based on recent experimental data. Confirmation of proposed method is made using experimental data for various kind of ship models to show sufficient accuracy for practical use. Direction of its application to initial design of hull form is shown conceptionally.
