A 56 years old ship was investigated for some items concerning her strength. Items investigated were the thickness of shell and deck plates, local and overall deformation of the hull, the wear of rivet heads and characteristics of steel plates of the hull. The characteristics of old plates tested were chemical compositions, static and dynamic tensile strength, fracture toughness and fatigue strength. Thickness distribution of old plates with worn out hole due to corrosion were also measured. Based on the results of investigations, the reliability of the ship was discussed. Results obtained were as follows; 1. The mean deterioration rate of shell plates at midship was as low as about 5%, in spite of their old age. Though there existed some deep corroded parts in them. 2. The 5 percent of the whole ship hull mentioned above may correspond to about 0.6% vacant hole area rate of the whole hull. 3. A small amount deformation of the ship hull as a whole may be responsible for the long term service and repeated repairs by welding. 4. The original steel of 56 years old plates showed good tensile strength, but poor weldability and fracture toughness. 5. Very rough surfaces of steel plates due to corrosion largely diminishes the fatigue life of them, because of decrease in thickness and stress increase by roughness. 6. The reliability level of the ship is very low. The level may reveal itself at a time of emergency.
