It is important to know the magnitude of stress exerted on machines and structures when designing them suitably with high accuracy. In many cases, however it is difficult to measure the magnitude of stresses directly during experiments. Instead, it is customary to measure the amount of strain at the target point by means of strain gages, and then the corresponding stress is calculated following the theory of solid mechanics. Measuring method by use of strain gages follow the theory that the variation of electric resistance is proportional to elongation or shrinkage generated in the strain gage due to tensile or compression loads. The purpose of this report is to introduce the theory and practice of the stress measurement by means of strain gages.
