東海道・山陽新幹線におけるゴキブリの被害調査ならびに殺虫剤抵抗性の実験を行うとともに,ダイアジノンMC剤による防除効果に関する現車試験を行い,下記の知見を得た。(1)新幹線のゴキブリは各種病原菌を媒介するなど衛生上の被害のほか,乗客に不快感を与え,車内では配電盤や蛍光灯.その他の電気機器類に入って車両故障の原因となる。新幹線電車では食堂車,ビュッフェが最も多く,そのほか,車両間の渡り板下部やくずもの入れ,洗面所下部,戸袋,デッキにある塔載品収納庫などに多い。(2)新幹線のゴキブリはフェニトロチオン,フェンチオン,ダイアジノンMC剤のいずれの薬剤に対しても殺虫剤感受性ゴキブリより強く,これら有機りん系殺虫剤に対してかなり抵抗性を得ていると考えられる。(3)新幹線における現行の燻煙処理だけでは残存虫が多く,十分な駆除効果は期待できない。(4)ダイアジノンMC剤は新幹線のゴキブリに対して残効性も高く,かなりの防除効果を有するが,燻煙処理より遅効性であるので,現行の防除処理行程でゴキブリがすでに多く生息する列車を処理すると,営業運転中に車両の通路や座席周辺に仮死状態で現われ死滅し乗客の目にとまるという難点がある。(5)ダイアジノンMC剤は低毒性で引火性がない上に,散布時の薬臭もほとんど問題でなく,1編成列車を2人で2時間程度で防除処理できて作業性もよい。(6)ダイアジノンMC剤による防除では1回の防除経費はもとより,従来の燻煙処理法より年間処理回数をかなり節減できるので,防除経費が相等節約でき経済的である。(7)新車,あるいは工場で解体検査を行いゴキブリがごく少ない状態の車両にダイアジノンMC剤による防除処理を一定周期で施行すれば相当な効果が期待でき,さらに,燻煙処理とうまく併用すればより有効で,効果的であると考えられる。

Because of its warm and food-rich condition, SHINKANSEN train is a suitable habitat of cockroaches. Therefore, the train is overrun with cockroaches. In addition to being a sanitary hazard, cockroaches are posing a serious problem to JNR, when they sometimes invade into electric instruments; Cockroach invasion is liable to cause electric disorder and it may lead to disturbances of train operation due to electric failure. At present, smoking with organic phosphorus insecticide (dichlorvos) has mainly been used for cockroach control in trains. But it lacks persistency of the effect and is not so effective to cockroaches as expected. Experiments were performed about use of microencapsulated diazinon insecticide to determine to what extent this cockroach control is effective for eradication of cockroaches in SHINKANSEN trains. Results of the laboratory and train tests are summarized as follows: (1) The cockroach which breeds in SHINKANSEN trains is the German cockroach, Blattella germanica Linne. (2) Generally, most of the cockroaches inhabit the dining car and buffet, and number of cockroach individuals decreases gradually with an increased distance from these places. They were more liable to live under or inside of gangboads connecting two cars, trash boxes, lavatories, doorcases, storages for housing emergency articles on the deck, etc. (3) The smoking control in the existing practice is incomplete as a method of eradicating cockroaches in SHINKANSEN trains, Therefore, cockroach control in them in future should not rely on a smoking control method alone which employs a smoking agent. (4) The cockroaches in SHINKANSEN trains have acquired considerable resistance to organic phosphorus insecticides, such as fenitrothion, fenthion and diazinon. (5) Generally speaking, the effects of organic phosphorus insecticides are not durable over a long period. But the experimental results indicated the effect of microencapsulated diazinon insecticide would last for four months or more. (6) It was found that the cockroaches exposed to insecticides would creep out into the aisles and other conspicuous places and die there in view of the passengers, when microencapsulated diazinon was used in trains already infested with numerous cockroaches. Then passengers would probably file a complaint with JNR. (7) Microencapsulated diazinon insecticide will be more desirably and more effectively employed in trains newly introduced in service or immediately after the overhaul. To prevent or exterminate cockroaches in SHINKANSEN trains, the best result will be obtained when microencapulated diazinon insecticide is employed without relying on smoking agents only.
