The aim of this study was to investigate the effects of Emdogain^[○!R] gel (EMD) on injured pulp tissue. After Pulpotomy was performed in the mandibular first molars of rats, EMD or calcium hydroxide (Ca(OH)_2) was applied to the exposed pulp tissue. The treated teeth were extracted after 7, 14 and 28 days and prepared for histochemical examination. In the EMD-treated rats, few cells expressed IL-1β throughout the experimental period, but cells expressing BMP-4 rapidly increased in number. Newly formed reparative dentin was observed earlier and larger in amount than that seen in the Ca(OH)_2-treated rats. On the other hand, in the Ca(OH)_2-treated rats, numerous macrophages expressing IL-1β were first observed around the abscess, and then cells expressing BMP-4 gradually increased in number with the reparative dentin formation. These results suggest that there may be a difference in the time and extent of expression of cytokine and growth factors between EMD and Ca(OH)_2-treated rats. It is speculated that EMD scarcely irritates injured pulp tissue, and may have the benefit efficacy to create a favorable environment promoting wound healing of the injured pulp tissue.
