Abstract
This study investigated the required abilities for product designers. The changes of required abilities in developmental stages from novice to experienced designer were also investigated. Semi-structured interview for six designers were conducted to investigate the required abilities to be an experienced designer. It was found that having creative ideas, presentation strategies, and autonomous learning attitudes were the most required abilities for product designer. In addition, this study found the changes of required capabilities in developmental stages: (1) the shifts from the ability of describing imagination by using hand-writing or product design software to the ability of embodying creative ideas in actual product design, (2) the shifts from the basic presentation skills with colleagues to the effective presentation skills with clients. Especially, the negotiation skills were required highly in the professional stages.
