抄録

Surveying a variety of the grand challenges proposed so far, the author characterizes the Grand Challenges in Pattern Recognition & Media Understanding as a good and useful guide for finding hard yet fruitful directions of mid-term researches in computer vision and pattern-media understanding. A few outspoken critics, however, are also given such as advice on synergetic studies with experts in other fields, and need for investigating pattern analysis with parallel computing systems available in the near future. Finally, the author argues how the pattern related studies have evolved and describe their future images as a branch of science. He hopes that young and very gifted people could find new horizons of computer science through the hard challenge to solve the fundamental problems in AI.
