Abstract
The wind turbines with a flanged-diffuser shroud -so called “wind-lens turbine”- are developed as one of high performance wind turbines by Ohya et al. The steady and unsteady wind turbine performances are investigated in the paper. The flow structure around the compact-type wind turbine is made clear by PIV and CFD in steady winds. Also, the compact- and long-type wind-lens turbines clearly show higher efficiency than conventional wind turbines. Furthermore, the performances of the conventional wind turbine and the wind-lens turbines – the compact-type and long-type in unsteady winds are experimentally and numerically investigated. Experimental and numerical examples are presented to demonstrate the dependence of the wind velocity frequency on the power coefficients in the harmonic oscillating velocity wind. Consequently, using the present designed rotor, the long-type wind-lens turbine is the most suitable for the harmonic oscillating velocity wind over the tip-speed ratio 5.0. Furthermore, the numerical estimation can predict the power coefficients for the fluctuating flows within the accuracy of 80%
