Abstract

Poly(phenyleneethynylene)s [PPEs] have rigid backbone composed of benzene ring and carbon-carbon triple bond, and they are promising as the material for gas separation membranes.In this study, we synthesized PPEs having pentiptycene units in the backbone and investigated their gas permeation properties. PPEs bearing pentiptycene units were prepared by Pd/Cu-catalyzed polymerization. The free-standing membranes of PPEs with pentiptycene units could be prepared by solvent casting method, and the gas permeability was measured. The gas permeability was found to be low compared to that of PPE without peniptycene units.
