In order to investigate the effect of the flow disturbance caused by the contraction and dilatation of the left ventricle on the hemodynamics in the aorta consisting of the ascending aorta, aortic arch, and descending aorta, we carried out computer simulations of unsteady blood flow in the aorta based on the velocity profile measured at the ascending aorta with the phase contrast MRI method. It was shown that the wall shear distribution is affected by not only the axial velocity profile at the inlet of the aorta but also the secondary flow there, especially at the ascending aorta and aortic arch. The results indicate the importance of the inlet flow condition in the evaluation of the hemodynamics in the aorta which is related to the pathogenesis and development of various vascular diseases such as aortic aneurysm and atherosclerosis.
