Intraventricular flow was numerically analyzed to investigate the effects of the opening mode of the mitral valve on flow dynamics in its downstream. The opening modes examined include an axisymmetric opening, an anatomically-oriented cutter-valve opening, an anti-anatomically oriented cutter-valve opening in addition to an instantaneous opening at the onset of diastole. Although the valve opening accounts for less than 10% of the diastolic phase from the beginning of diastole, the opening mode of the valve has a great impact on the velocity profile of a trans-mitral flow and the development of vortices in the left ventricle during diastole. The results suggested that a design of the opening mode of the mitral valve including a shape of the valve orifice is important in developing of artificial valves.
