This study was conducted based on the idea that the closely spaced Savonius wind turbines located along the side of a road or a bridge deck may also work as a wind shield. In order to clarify the effects of surrounding condition on the wind speed reduction in the wake of the closely spaced three turbines and the power generation characteristics, wind tunnel experiments were conducted. Three surrounding conditions, i.e., on a flat ground, on the edge of a flat bridge deck, and on an embankment, were considered. With those surroundings, better shielding effects were observed than in the case without any surroundings. Although the expected amount of the power generation is modest, the application of closely located wind turbines may be thought as a possible choice to accomplish the reduction of accidents due to strong wind as well as the wind power generation.
