Abstract

Boundary lubrication can easily be broken to yield severe adhesion when subjected to high pressure sliding contact. In such a case, so-called extreme pressure additives are usually added to the mineral oil to protect the surfaces from severe wear and seizure. However, although there are many studies on their efficacy, it is difficult to find an adequate guideline for right selection suited to the encountered problem. The present authors conducted the friction tests for S type, P type, Cl type, S-P blended type, Cl-P blended type and also solid lubricants by using a four-ball tester to clear the difference between their protection mechanisms for wear and scuffing. The results show that the effects of those additives vary with the contact conditions resulting different temperature flash.
