Abstract

In the field of product designing, a person skilled in designing creates drawings and specifications which are considered optimum for a certain design object based on knowledge, his/her patterns of thinking, and so on obtained from long years of experience. The majority of such knowledge consist of tacit knowledge the person. Moreover, the design process may be iterative due to change of requirement, trial and error, and/or the like, and thus the design process is difficult to be described appropriately by a conventional process description method of sequential execution type. The systematic RDC model is developed for capturing such implicit and explicit works in product design processes by describing external requirements, concept definitions, internal requirements, detailed definitions, and confirmations of the each work elements for design process planning, design process validation and requirement definitions. This method facilitates our review, communization, standardization of a design process, and consequently improves the design quality.
