Abstract

In the present review, recent advances in the understandings of the surface structure of HDS catalysts, the structure of CoMoS, and reaction mechanism as well as in the surface design for highly active HDS catalysts and characterization techniques are overviewed toward the developments of highly active catalysts for the HDS of gasoil. In particular, detailed knowledge on the structure of active sites and activity is required for better understandings of HDS catalysts as well as for the surface design of HDS catalysts. It is emphasized that intimate combinations of theoretical chemistry, in situ spectroscopy, surface science, and preparation chemistry are mandatory for further advances in HDS catalysts and catalytic chemistry.
