Abstract

In order to study mercury emitted from Minamijigokudani, Mt. Myoko which locates south-west of Niigata Prefecture and its influence, fumarolic gases, condensates, air, rocks and soils were collected and analysed. The average value of mercury concentration in fumarolic gases, condensates and air were 0.93 mg/m<sup>3</sup>, 10 ng/ml and 0.49 μg/m<sup>3</sup> respectively. It was estimated that the quantity of yearly mercury output was 0.5-2 kg by analytical results of fumarolic gases and its volume, 0.8-3 kg by analytical results of air and stream of fumarolic gas. To know the sphere of the influence of fumarolic gas mercury concentration in barks and leaves of <i>Betula Ermani</i> were analysed as an indicator and it was found that the sphere was within about 1000m along valley from fumaroles.
