Coprostanol and cholesterol were determined in sediments and sea water, taken from Tokyo Bay from 1969 to 1972. Coprostanol was distributed in all sediments and the highest concentration was found at the mouth of the River Sumida, both in sea water (6.6 µg/l) and sediment (48 µg/g). The accumulation was remarkable especially in coastal region. The ratio of coprostanol to cholesterol showed the scale of the fecal pollution. Relatively higher fecal pollution was observed in both sea water and sediment at the mouth of Tokyo Bay.
