A kerogen from a recent lacustrine sediment (Lake Haruna) was characterized by pyrolysis gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (Py-GC-MS). The kerogen generated n-alkenes, n-alkanes, isoprenoidal hydrocarbons, fatty acid methylesters, fatty acids, alkylbenzenes, indenes, naphthalenes, phenols, methoxyphenols, furans, cyclopentenones, pyrroles, pyridines and indoles. These products were interpreted to be derived from lipid-, carbohydrate-, amino acid-, protein- and lignin-derived structures in kerogen. These interpretations are supported by the our previous results of organic compound analyses. The pyrolysis products were concluded to be useful for indicators of precursory materials of kerogen formation.
