Abstract

The Joint Global Ocean Flux Study (JGOFS) is an internationally coordinated ocean research programme for the period of 1990 to 2000, now being planned under the sponsorship of SCOR of ICSU. Its objectives are to determine and understand, on a global scale, the processes controlling the time-varying fluxes of carbon and associated biogenic elements in the ocean, and evaluate the related changes with the atmosphere, sea floor and continental boundaries. Some aspects of the JGOFS topics and strategies for investigation are described in this article.
