Abstract

In statistics education around the world, variability is considered as a fundamental idea for statistical literacy. In this study, we will analyze a number of questions studied in previous researches about variability in statistics education. Also, we will consider the objectives about conceptions of variability in those questions, from our perspective on what implicit ideas about variability are being assumed to answer them. Conceptions of variability defined by the background specified by statistical concepts, and "thinking about variability" in the case of statistical problem solving, are two different things. These things let us correct misleading ideas on teaching statistics in traditional mathematics, and ensure variability as instructional content as a goal of education for statistical literacy in mathematics.
