The present study aims to investigate the key factors determining the preferences of Japanese university students for English learning methods. Fourteen university students participated in this study and were interviewed individually about their preferences for English learning methods and the reason behind these preferences. The results showed that (a) in receptive skills (listening and reading), factors related to the learning environment and habit as well as learning content play a key role in determining learners' preferences, and (b) in productive skills (speaking and writing) the key factors is striking a balance between feelings of anxiety about being judged by others and making mistakes in public and a sense of satisfaction experienced when communicating with others.
