The present study investigated the effects of Astilbe thunbergii rhizome extract on pancreatic lipase activity in vitro. The 50% ethanol extracts of rhizomes of A. thunbergii (EATE) significantly inhibited pancreatic lipase activity in vitro. Furthermore, EATE was suspended in H_2O, and was chromatographed on a DIAION HP-20 column, and eluted with H_2O, methanol, successively. The fraction eluted with methanol significantly inhibited pancreatic lipase activity in vitro. In this experiment, EATE significantly reduced the elevation of rat plasma triacylglycerol level after oral administration of a lipid emulsion compared with that of rats given the lipid emulsion alone. Furthermore, we examined the effects of EATE on the plasma triacylglycerol and chylomicron levels of oral adiministration with a high-fat diet in humans. EATE reduced the plasma triacylglycerol and chylomicron levels compared with that of humans given the high-fat diet alone. Therefore, these results suggest that EATE may be an effective crude drug for the treatment of hyperlipidaemia caused by a high-fat diet.
