Abstract

Reirokusan, a medicinal preparation consisting of velvet horn and red ginseng was studied for its effect on immune responses. One thousand mg/kg/day p.o. Reirokusan stimulated the suppressed phagocytic activity of reticuloendothelial system and delayed type hypersensitivity (DTH) response of water-immersion- and restrain-stressed mice and suppressed the cyclophosphamide-promoted DTH response. However, the same treatment had no effect on the phagocytic activity and the DTH response in normal mice. Reirokusan also activated complement at a concentration of 30 mg/ml and inhibited dose-dependently the growth of Sarcoma 180 ascites. In normal animals, Reirokusan inhibited the type II allergic reaction at 300 mg/kg/day p.o. or more, but not the type I, III and IV allergic reactions even at 1,000 mg/kg/day p.o. In immunopromoted mice, Reirokusan inhibited the type IV allergic reaction at 1,000 mg/kg/day p.o. These results suggest that Reirokusan may stimulate the suppressed immune responses and suppress the promoted immune responses without affecting the normal immune responses.
