Abstract
Antimutagenic activities of substances from Rosmarinus officinalis L. (rosemary) of the family Labiatae were investigated. A hot water extract prepared from rosemary leaves which had been steam distilled inhibited the frameshift mutation caused by 3-amino-l-methyl-5H-pyrido[4,3b]indole in Salmonella typhimurium TA98. Two active substances were identified in the hot water extract, which were 5-hydroxy-6,7,4'-trimethoxyflavone (salvigenin) and 5,4'-dihydroxy-6,7-dimethoxyflavone (cirsimaritin). These are the first flavones reported in rosemary leaves.
