Abstract

The performance of tilting pad journal bearings in high speed operation was experimentally tested focusing on loss reduction and bearing temperature while maintaining their reliability. For this purpose, miscellaneous approaches were studied such as reduction of oil supply flow rate, improvement of bearing oil supply, bearing materials, and oil type. Test bearing was a five-pad tilting pad type with 170 mm shaft diameter installed in a sealed housing. The results show the oil supply flow rate is an important factor to reduce bearing loss even in the sealed housing. And a small spacing gap between oil supply nozzles and a shaft surface is effective to reduce bearing temperature at high speed. Further, the effect of polymer bearing material and synthetic oil on bearing temperature characteristics are presented.
