Erosion and Sedimentation in Lake-catchment Systems in Japan and Korea on the Basis of an Elementary Process Model

Abstract

A model is introduced to clarify the elementary process in a lake-catchment system, using the relationship between erosion/transportation in the catchment and sedimentation in the lake. The model is based on a continuous equation with some assumptions, and shows that sedimentation rate in the lake is a function of rainfall intensity and transportability factor related to system conditions, a conclusion supported by field data (6 - 14 years observation) from three small lake (reservoir)-catchment systems in Japan and Korea. Artificial disturbance in the systems and seismic activity in the vicinity also have a significant influence on the sedimentation rate. The relationship between the seasonal sedimentation rate and rainfall is more correlative than the monthly relationship, indicating the reservoir effect in the catchments.
