Abstract

In recent years, the growing' recognition of the social determinants of health has stimulated research on social capital and mental health, Although previous studies have found that social capital may be a useful factor in the prevention of mental illness, mechanism is not clear for now, The aim of this study was to reinforce the hypothesized discussion regarding pathways from social capital to psychological distress via supportive relationships. Our results showed that the odds ratios of psychological distress was higher in groups with some social support/lower trust (odds ratio 1.25; 95% CI, 1.07-1.47) or no social support/lower trust (odds ratio 2.72; 95% CI, 1.70-4.35), than those in groups with some social support/higher trust. We consider that these findings contribute to the discussion; why does social capital promote mental health?
