Abstract
The purpose of this study is to examine the types of adaptation among young professional workers. In order to do so, the author conducted a cluster analysis of data collected by a questionnaire survey among young nurses (N=237). In this study, adaptation was visualized in terms of four concepts : affective commitment, occupational socialization, cultural socialization, and turnover intention. Based on this categorization, the nurses' organizational adaptation was classified into three cluster types : low affective commitment -high turnover intention type, step-up type, and low socialization type. The analysis in the study showed the distinctiveness of professional organization adaptation. Moreover, the clusters were formed on the basis of length of service. It was shown that the length of service affects organization adaptation. Thereby, it became possible to understand the mechanism of the career development in an organization. The results of this study indicate that young professional workers' organizational adaptation falls into various types. If the management can devise adaptation tactics to suit specific adaptation types, it will be able to promote organizational adaptation among young professional workers.
