[Purpose] The purpose of this article is to clarify the relationships between family assessment and support for family caregivers by care managers. [Method] The research design is a cross-sectional mail survey. Participants are 500 care managers in home-based care support centers of Kinki district. [Results] The response rate to the survey was 47.6% (N=238). The factor analysis identified two factors related to family assessment. The factors are as follows: "understanding of family caregivers' conditions" and "understanding of family relationships." Multiple regression analyses that controlled gender, caseload and length of experience were also performed to examine the relationship between family assessment and support for family caregivers. [Conclusion] The results indicated that "understanding of family caregivers' conditions" has a statistically significant association with all domains of support for family caregivers. It also showed "understanding of family relationships" has a significant association with most of these domains. These findings suggest that care managers' support family caregivers based on understanding of family caregivers' conditions and understanding of family relationships will help the care managers to coordinate families.
