Abstract

[Purpose] The objective of this study was to investigate the fatigue experienced by home-visiting professional caregivers. [Materials and Methods] A total of 24 female professional caregivers participated in the study, 12 home-visiting and 12 day-service caregivers. Subjective and objective fatigue were assessed by questionnaire survey and actigraphy measurements of the sleep-wake rhythm, respectively. Salivary amylase activity as a stress indicator was measured before and after carework. [Results] Objective fatigue scores significantly increased after carework in both the home-visiting and day-service caregivers. However, there was no significant difference between the groups. The ratio of subjective fatigue was 83.3% in the home-visiting group, and 16.7% in the day-service group. A significant difference in subjective fatigue was found between the groups. Salivary amylase activity remained unchanged compared between before and after work in both the groups, however, it significantly increased after carework in home. [Conclusion] Variation in fatigue of both home-visiting and day-service professional caregivers may be diurnal. Sufficient rest or sleep is recommended to prevent the accumulation of fatigue in professional caregivers.
