Abstract
This study proposes tree-structured coherences as the standards for evaluating texts, based on the discourse-structure analysis (Hobbs, 1990; Hobbs, et al. 1993; Kameyama, 1999). 48 Japanese and 41 foreign students were classified into four categories (central coherence, same sentence, peripheral coherence, and others), and the numbers in each category were calculated. As a result, there was significant difference between Japanese and foreign students in the "others" category rather than the "central coherence" category.
