Abstract

Dental pulp is important for maintenance of tooth function. Non-vital teeth lost their defensive abilities and which are often followed by the severe damages resulting in extraction of the tooth. On the other hand, because the dental pulp exists within rigid hard tissue walls, it is confined to a low-compliance system. Therefore, it is beneficial to establish the dentin-pulp complex regeneration therapy. We have developed the strategy that regeneration of the dentin-pulp complex from amputated dental pulp. It is generally accepted that the tissue regeneration requires three major component; stem cells, growth factors, and scaffolds. In our dentin-pulp complex regeneration methods, we applied the pulpal stem cells of the residual root pulp. For growth factors, we examined the usefulness of the controlled release of FGF-2 from gelatin hydrogel microspheres. Furthermore, we examined the potential of hyaluronic acid as scaffolds for dentin-pulp complex therapy. In this article, it is shown that details of the dentin-pulp complex regeneration by application of exogenous growth factors and scaffolds to amputated dental pulp.
