Abstract
The purpose of this paper is to clarify the validity and limits of the Habermas' communication theory in first language education in Japan by considering the concept of consensus. Through this analysis, it has become clear how to receive other studies as the theoretical background in this area. As a result of this study, the following five proposals were obtained: 1) The viewpoint of intersubjective society, based on communication and discussion. 2) We should not except emotional and political aspects in the teaching of communication. 3) In the teaching of logical thinking-power, we should realize that procedures of pragmatics such as Speech Act Theory are more important than that of formal logic. 4) Procedures of pragmatics have the risk of paying little attention to "otherness". 5) We need to develop discussion activities that focus on the background and motivations of each discussion beside the existing consensus issue.
