Abstract

[Objectives] The purpose of this study was to examine the effect of a simple yoga program on the low back pain of nurses and professional caregivers, and to assess it's related factors. [Methods] The yoga program was composed of solar worship and a series of operation with three kinds of pauses. This program was simply designed so that it could easily be done in approximately 6 minutes without complicated instructions. The subjects were 11 nurses and professional caregivers. They carried out the yoga program everyday for two weeks at home. Before the program, all the subjects replied to a questionnaire that asked subjective symptoms of low back pain using visual analog scale, ages, the occupations and job tenures. After the program, they answered answer another form for the low back pain and their impression of the yoga program by an open-ended question. [Results and Conclusion] The yoga program was carried out 9.5±2.8 times in average range 4-14 in two weeks. After the yoga program, the low back pain was significantly improved (p<0.01). However, the change in the low back pain was not correlated with job tenures, ages or the frequency of the yoga exercise. As for the impression of the yoga program, the subjects described such as "the body got worm" and "it brought sweating". This yoga program may be effective for the relief of low back pain in nurses and professional caregivers.
