Abstract

The purposes of the present study are to identify the characteristics of Situierung changes in individuals who had recovered from depression and to examine methods of nursing intervention that support the recovery process from depression. The study included nine individuals who had recovered from depression. Three to four semi-structured interviews were conducted per participant. Transcripts were categorized based on a Situierung axis and a temporal axis comprising "before depression", "during depression", and "now", and changes in Situierung were analyzed. Our results showed that participants had a tendency even before the onset of depression to lead a lifestyle of repressing their self domain and instead investing more energy on their professional domain. With the onset of depression their lives became dictated by the physical symptoms they suffered, but they learned to view themselves objectively as they recovered physically. In the domain of their personal selves, they underwent a change in lifestyle to one with awareness for their physical sensations and emotions. In their professional domain, after going through a phase of self-conflict for not working, they adopted a more flexible approach to thinking about work and how they work. Lastly, in the family domain, family members were found to play the role of supporters of the changes in self and professional domains.
