Abstract

The present study aimed to clarify the relationship of physical stress response to child-rearing stress, postpartum depression and maternal identity in mothers attending their infant's 6-month check-up. Salivary Amylase was measured as an index of physical stress response while child-rearing stress, Postpartum Depression and maternal identity were measured using the Parenting Stress Index-Short form (Japanese version), the Edinburgh Postnatal Depression Scale (Japanese version) and the Maternal Identity Scale, respectively. Valid responses were received from 48 of 113 subjects (42.5%). Positive correlations were observed between salivary Amylase levels and child-rearing stress, Postpartum Depression, and passive or negative maternal identity. For child-rearing stress, "stress related to infant's characteristics" was particularly associated with increased salivary Amylase levels. These findings suggest that a measurable physical stress response is related to child-rearing stress, Postpartum Depression and maternal identity. Therefore, measuring salivary Amylase may provide an effective and relatively easy method to detect mothers with child-rearing stress or a tendency toward postpartum depression or who are passively engaged in child rearing.
