As a new approach to achieve long-lasting antibacterial effects for reconstructive materials, we have developed polyHEMA/TMPT hydrogel particles loaded with cetylpyridinium chloride (CPC), that can release and recharge CPC. Previously, we found that the hydrogel comprising 50% HEMA/50% TMPT was suitable for release of CPC, and the recharging CPC to this particle possible. Here we analyzed the CPC-loading mechanism of polyHEMA/TMPT hydrogel and release profile under different recharging protocol. CPC was found to be loaded in the micellized state, and continuous release was obtained by usage of high concentrations of CPC with short-period recharging.
