Abstract
The purpose of this study is to analyze a collaborative learning between Japan and Syria from the viewpoint of "Community of Practice (CoP)" in order to develop the guideline for fostering community in cross cultural setting with use of the Internet. Theory of CoP provides three analytical dimensions, such as joint enterprise, mutual engagement and shared repertories. In this case study, Japanese and Syrian students communicate through the Internet to produce a book collaboratively. The joint enterprise in the case study is to produce a storybook collaboratively so that students engage mutually to produce the book and acquire competency needed for cross-cultural collaboration through participating in the practice. As a result of the analysis, three factors fostering CoP were suggested.
