We examined the psychosomatic effects of solving mental arithmetic tasks on VDTs (Visual Display Terminals) for 90 minutes in 15 men between 20 and 23 years of age. Salivary cortisol levels at 30, 60, and 90 minutes after the start of the VDT tasks were not significant compared with baseline level (0 minutes). Sixty minutes after the start of the tasks, scores of measures representing 'stiffness of shoulders and tiredness of eyes' were significantly higher than baseline, while relaxation, motivation, and concentration were significantly lower. Both the number of overall answers and the number of correct answers declined over time.
