Abstract

This study aimed to evaluate the static and cyclic fatigue strength of surface-roughened zirconia. Y-TZP, Y-TZP HIP (hot isostatic pressing to Y-TZP) and NanoZR (Ce-TZP/Al_2O_3 nanocomposite) were subjected to different surface treatments; mirror polishing, blasting with alumina, and blasting+acid etching. The bi-axial flexure strength in static test of mirror polished Y-TZP HIP showed 1819MPa that were larger than those of Y-TZP and NanoZR, respectively, and the static strength of Y-TZP HIP decreased with increasing surface roughness. Though the bi-axial flexure strength in cyclic fatigue test showed a remarkable decrease in comparison with those of static strength, the cyclic fatigue strength were sufficient for clinical use.
