Abstract

This study aimed to obtain suggestions for support to improve exercise situations in mothers with 3 year old children by clarifying their exercise situations and influential elements. An original and self-report style questionnaire was developed for this study and then distributed to mothers whose infants underwent compulsory health examinations for 3 year old children. The examinations were held in two public health centers. The distribution numbers were 530, collection numbers were 226 (collection rate: 42.6%) and valid collection numbers were 201 (valid collection rate: 37.9%). Among 201 responses, 59 mothers (29.4%) did walking and stretching. Mothers recognized that cooperation and understanding of a family, free time, low costs, were necessary to exercise. Data were compared between exercise groups and no-exercise groups. As a result, the exercise groups indicated significantly higher numbers of mothers who exercised during their pre- and mid- pregnancy periods and significantly lower numbers of mothers who do not undergo unpleasant symptoms in mothers with 3 year old children. This study proposes the following two supports: A support to promote exercise in pre- and mid- pregnancy periods, and a support that mothers are able to engage in fun exercise without unnecessary burden on the basis of stages of exercise behavior change in the Transtheoretical Model.
