In structural design done so far, the strength of columns has been equal to or more than that of beams; however it is surprising that when examining specific damage caused by earthquakes, the number of instances of damage suffered by columns exceeds that experienced by beams. In this report an examination was made about why beams are less likely to be destroyed than columns. Presently, in both the design and study of beams it is assumed that axial force is zero; therefore in the process of bending yield, the neutral axis moves toward the compression zone crossing the central axis, which means that the axial elongation can happen in design and experiments. But, in fact, it is restricted by slabs and other elements. As a result, an analysis of cantilever beams shows that the flexural strength of cantilever beams increases by 50% because of axial rigidity of slabs. This would explain why beams are less likely to be destroyed than columns.
