Abstract

This paper deals with a series of material test relating to especially color and mechanical characteristics of mortar used for historical masonry structures such as Hagia Sophia, Istanbul. Test results show that compressive strength of the mortar under saturated surface-dried condition is obtained 0.3 to 0.7 times of the value of the mortar under absolute dry condition. Relationship between the mix proportion of the mortar, its color, and its water content is clarified. Experimental equation of estimating the mix proportion of the mortar is given and mechanical characteristics of mortar such as compressive strength are obtained.
